Slack agent

A Slack AI agent trained on your own docs

Add your intoCHAT agent to a Slack workspace and it answers @mentions in channels and direct messages, always in a thread, with the same knowledge, instructions and actions as your website chat. Your team can step into any thread from the Inbox.

Example: an internal IT helpdesk channel

Visitor: @intochat how do I connect to the office VPN from a new laptop?

Agent: Install the VPN client from the Self Service portal, sign in with your work account and choose the Office profile. If the sign-in fails, set up multi-factor authentication on your phone first, as described in the IT handbook.

Visitor: @intochat and where do I request a second monitor?

Agent: Hardware requests go through the IT request form on the intranet, under Equipment. Your manager approves the request, and IT gets in touch about delivery.

The same questions keep landing in Slack

Where is the holiday policy? What does the enterprise plan include? How do I reset a customer's password? Questions end up in Slack because that is where people already are, and the colleagues who know the answers get interrupted again and again. The answers often exist already, in your help center, your handbook, Notion or Google Drive, but nobody goes looking for them in the middle of a conversation.

Why add an AI agent to Slack

It is the agent you already trained, now answering where your team asks.

  • Answers where people ask

Mention @intochat in any channel the app was invited to, or send it a direct message. It replies in a thread under the question, so channels stay readable.

  • Trained on your own content

The agent answers from the sources you trained it on, such as website pages, files, text, Q&A pairs, Notion pages and Google Drive files, and follows your instructions and guardrails.

  • Follow-ups keep their context

One Slack thread is one conversation. Follow-up questions in the same thread are answered with the earlier messages of that thread in mind.

  • Your team can step in

Every Slack thread appears on the agent's Conversations tab with a Slack badge. Reply from intoCHAT and your message is posted in the thread with your name, while the AI pauses.

  • Reads only what it is asked

The app receives mentions of itself and direct messages to it. It doesn't read other channel messages and doesn't import your Slack history.

How to connect Slack

  1. Click Add to Slack

Open your agent, go to the Share tab and click Add to Slack on the Slack card. Pick your workspace and click Allow. Some workspaces ask an admin to approve new apps first.

  2. Try a direct message

Open the intoCHAT app under Apps in Slack's sidebar and send it a question. The answer arrives in a thread under your message.

  3. Invite it to channels

Type /invite @intochat in a channel, then mention it with your question. It answers in public and private channels it was invited to.

  4. Decide how people reach your team

With hand-off by email on, a colleague who asks for a person is passed to your team, and the conversation enters the Inbox. You can also move any Slack conversation to the Inbox yourself.

Slack agent details

  • Mentions and direct messages

In channels, only messages that mention the app are read, also inside threads, where you mention it again for each question. In direct messages, every message is answered.

  • Slack formatting

Replies use bold, bullet lists, code and clickable links. Buttons and product cards from your actions are posted as links under the reply, and long replies are split into several messages.

  • Actions and procedures

Server-side API actions, procedures, hand-off by email and order lookups work as in the widget. Forms, carts, booking times and client actions need a web page, so they aren't offered in Slack.

  • Human takeover in the thread

From the Inbox or the Conversations tab, your reply is posted in the Slack thread as the intoCHAT app with your first name in bold in front of it. The AI pauses on that thread and resumes by itself 24 hours after the last team reply or pause.

  • One workspace per agent

A workspace answers for one agent at a time, and an agent connects to one workspace. If your internal helpdesk needs different knowledge from your website, give it an agent of its own.

  • Limits that protect your plan

A workspace can send the agent up to 300 messages an hour; messages beyond that are saved for your team without an AI reply. Messages from other bots, edits and deletions get no answer.

  • Token stored encrypted

The app's Slack token is stored encrypted, never shown in the dashboard and only used to post replies and look up display names. Disconnect revokes it at Slack and deletes it.

  • Part of your conversation history

Slack conversations are kept and deleted like any other conversation, and show the channel slack in the REST API, the MCP server and the Inbox's channel filter.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Slack AI agent?

A Slack AI agent is a bot that answers questions in Slack with an AI model and your own content. intoCHAT's Slack agent is the same agent that can answer on your website: connect a workspace and it replies to @mentions and direct messages in threads, using your sources, instructions and actions.

Is this the same as Slack alerts?

No. Slack alerts post a message to one channel when this agent gets a new lead, a visitor asks for a person or sends a form, and they don't chat with anyone. The Slack agent answers questions in Slack. The two are separate and can be used together; Slack alerts are set up on the Leads tab, and the docs page Lead alerts and export explains them.

Which plan do I need?

The Slack agent is included from Starter. Each AI reply in Slack counts on your plan exactly as in the website chat: one message with the default model, more with a larger model. Your team's replies don't count. On Free, the Slack card shows an upgrade note.

Can I use it as an internal helpdesk?

Yes. Train an agent on your handbook, IT guides or policies, for example from files, Notion or Google Drive, and connect it to your company workspace. Colleagues ask in a channel or by direct message, and with hand-off by email on, questions it can't answer can be passed to your team.

Can I connect several workspaces to one agent?

No. An agent has at most one workspace, and a workspace answers for one agent at a time. To answer in another workspace, use another agent. Connecting a workspace that already answers for another intoCHAT agent is refused until it is disconnected there.

Does it read all our Slack messages?

No. Slack sends intoCHAT only messages that mention the app and direct messages to it. Other channel messages aren't read, and your Slack history isn't imported. Files and images in messages are ignored: the agent reads text only.

How does a teammate take over a thread?

Open the Slack conversation in the Inbox or on the Conversations tab and write in the reply box. Your message appears in the thread as the intoCHAT app with your first name in front of it, and the AI stays silent there until you click Resume AI or 24 hours pass after the last team reply. The owner, admins and editors can reply, pause and resume.

Does it remember earlier messages?

Within a thread, yes: follow-up questions are answered with the earlier messages of that thread in mind, as in the website chat. A new top-level message, in a channel or as a direct message, starts a new conversation.
