Documentation
Set up an agent, train it on your content and add it to your website.
Overview
intoCHAT puts an AI agent on your website that answers visitor questions from content you provide: pages of your site, documents, and question-and-answer pairs you write yourself.
You configure the agent in the dashboard and install it with one script tag. Later changes to its knowledge, instructions or appearance reach your site without touching the code again.
Quick start
From a new account to a working agent on your site.
- 1
Create an agent
Create an account, open Agents and choose New agent.
- 2
Add knowledge
On the Knowledge tab, add your website, upload documents, or paste text and Q&A. The agent answers from what it is given there and from its instructions.
- 3
Copy the embed code
On the Share tab, copy the script tag. It already contains your agent ID.
- 4
Add it to your site
Paste the script just before the closing
</body>tag, on every page where the agent should appear. - 5
Check it
Reload your site. The chat launcher appears in the bottom corner, with the colours and position set on the Appearance tab.
<script
src="https://www.intochat.ai/api/embed.js"
data-chatbot-id="YOUR_AGENT_ID"
></script>How answers are produced
When you add knowledge, intoCHAT splits it into passages and indexes them. For each visitor question, the passages most relevant to it are retrieved and given to the language model together with your instructions, and the model writes its answer from that material.
If nothing relevant is found, the agent says it cannot confirm the answer instead of guessing, and points to a contact route if you have configured one. Your knowledge base is treated as reference material, never as instructions, so text on a page cannot change how the agent behaves.
Terms used in the dashboard
- Instructions
- The agent's role, tone and limits, written in plain language. For example: answer in the visitor's language, keep replies short, send billing questions to the support address.
- Actions
- Calls to an HTTP API you configure, such as looking up an order, or functions that run on your own page. The agent uses each one only for the requests it is meant for.
- Lead collection
- A form inside the conversation that asks for an email address or phone number. See Lead collection for when it appears.
Script tag
Works on any site where you can edit the HTML, including the custom code settings of Webflow, Squarespace and Wix. Add it once, in a global footer or layout, so it loads on every page.
<script
src="https://www.intochat.ai/api/embed.js"
data-chatbot-id="YOUR_AGENT_ID"
></script>Next.js and React
In a Next.js App Router project, load the script once in the root layout with next/script. The lazyOnload strategy keeps it off the critical rendering path.
import Script from 'next/script'
export default function RootLayout({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
return (
<html lang="en">
<body>
{children}
<Script
src="https://www.intochat.ai/api/embed.js"
data-chatbot-id="YOUR_AGENT_ID"
strategy="lazyOnload"
/>
</body>
</html>
)
}In other React apps, such as Vite or Create React App, add the script tag to index.html. It loads once and stays in place across client-side route changes.
WordPress
Use the official plugin, which adds the script to every page for you: intochat.ai on WordPress.org
- 1
In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New.
- 2
Search for intochat.ai, then install and activate the plugin.
- 3
Go to Settings → intochat.ai and enter the agent ID shown on the Share tab.
Shopify
Add the script tag to your theme so it loads on every page of your store.
- 1
In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes, open the menu of your live theme and choose Edit code.
- 2
In the Layout folder, open
theme.liquid. - 3
Paste the script just before the closing
</body>tag and save.
<script
src="https://www.intochat.ai/api/embed.js"
data-chatbot-id="YOUR_AGENT_ID"
></script>Inline embed and direct link
To show the chat inside a page rather than as a floating launcher, embed it in an iframe. Both snippets below are also on the Share tab, with your agent ID filled in.
<iframe
src="https://www.intochat.ai/agent/YOUR_AGENT_ID"
width="100%"
height="600px"
frameborder="0"
></iframe>Direct link
Every agent also has its own page, which you can share as a link or a QR code:
https://www.intochat.ai/agent/YOUR_AGENT_IDEmbed script attributes
The script reads one attribute. Everything else, such as colours, launcher position, icon and greeting, is set on the Appearance tab and loaded when the page opens, so changes apply without editing your site.
| Attribute | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
data-chatbot-id | Yes | The ID of the agent to load, shown on the Share tab. |
Knowledge sources
Add sources on the Knowledge tab. How much you can add depends on your plan; see Pricing.
| Source | Details |
|---|---|
| Website | Enter a URL, then choose which of the pages found on that site to read. Up to 500 pages are found per crawl. |
| Files | PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OpenDocument, RTF, EPUB, CSV, plain text and Markdown. |
| Text | Any text you paste, such as a policy or a product description. |
| Q&A | Question-and-answer pairs, for answers you want worded exactly. |
Lead collection
When lead collection is on, the agent can show a form in the conversation asking for the fields you enable: email address, phone number or both. The trigger decides when the form appears.
| Trigger | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Manual | Only when the visitor asks to be contacted or offers their details. |
| AI | The agent decides when to ask, based on your description of a good lead. |
| Rules | After a set number of visitor messages, or when the visitor uses one of your keywords (up to 20). |
| Hybrid | Rules and AI together. |
The form appears at most three times in one conversation, always below the agent's answer. Submitted details appear on the Leads tab.
