Rich replies
Interactive chatbot replies: tables, cards and quick-reply buttons
With Rich replies on, your AI agent can put a comparison table, a row of cards or a set of quick-reply buttons under its answer, filled from your knowledge, the conversation and the results of your actions. Visitors compare at a glance, pick an option with one tap and move on without typing.
Visitor: What is the difference between your Basic and Pro plans?
Agent: Basic is for one person, Pro adds seats and priority support. Here they are side by side. [Table: Plan | Price | Seats — Basic | CHF 9 | 1 — Pro | CHF 29 | 5] [Start a trial] [Talk to sales]
Visitor: Talk to sales
Agent: Happy to connect you. You can book a short call with our sales team here. [Card: Sales call — 20 minutes — Open calendar]
Some answers don't fit in a paragraph
Ask a chatbot to compare three plans and you usually get a wall of text: the price of one in the first sentence, the seats of another in the fourth. Ask what to do next and the visitor has to type it out. Comparisons read better as a table, choices as cards and obvious next steps as buttons. Rich replies let the agent pick the right format for each answer, while the text answer stays for everything that is better said in words.
Why let your chatbot reply with more than text
The agent chooses the format for each reply. You keep control with one switch and your instructions.
Comparisons in a table
When a visitor compares plans, products or opening hours on the same points, the agent can lay them out in a table of up to 8 columns and 20 rows instead of a long paragraph.
Options as a row of cards
Several things to choose between appear as up to 10 cards, each with a title and optionally a subtitle, a picture, a price and up to two buttons. The row scrolls sideways like a carousel.
One-tap next steps
Quick replies are up to six short buttons under the latest reply. Tapping one sends its text as the visitor's message, so “Talk to sales” or “Track my order” is one tap away.
Filled with your facts
The agent is told to fill rich replies only with facts from your knowledge, the conversation or the results of your actions, never with invented products, prices, links or pictures.
No extra messages
A rich reply is part of the same answer, so it doesn't use an extra message, and it is included on every plan, Free included. It's on by default for every agent.
How to use rich replies
Check the switch
Open your agent and select the Appearance tab. Rich replies sits next to Suggest follow-up questions and Show sources under replies, and it is on by default. Click Save changes after you change it.
Try it in the Playground
The Playground uses the switch as it is on screen, before you save. Ask a comparison question such as “What is the difference between your plans?” and see how the agent lays out the answer.
Steer it with your instructions
The agent decides for each reply. If you want a format in a given situation, say so in your instructions, for example “Show our plans as a table when someone asks about prices.”
Review real conversations
On the Conversations tab, rich replies appear exactly as the visitor saw them, so you can check what the agent showed and adjust your knowledge or instructions where needed.
Rich reply details
Tables that fit the screen
A table has 1 to 8 columns and 1 to 20 rows, plain-text cells of up to 200 characters and an optional caption. On a narrow screen it scrolls sideways instead of squeezing the columns.
Cards with pictures, prices and buttons
A card has a title of up to 80 characters and can add a subtitle, a picture, a price written as text such as “from $9/month” and up to two buttons that either open a link or send a reply.
Quick replies that step aside
Quick replies show only under the latest reply and disappear once the visitor sends a message. While they are shown, follow-up question suggestions aren't, so the two don't compete.
Checked before it is shown
Everything is plain text: HTML is refused and Markdown marks are removed. Links and pictures must be full https:// addresses; http, javascript: and data: links, addresses with a user name or password and localhost are refused.
All or nothing
A table, row of cards or set of quick replies that breaks a rule isn't shown at all, never in part. The text answer and any other valid rich reply still appear, and when the agent has other tools it is told what was wrong and may fix it in the same reply.
Matches your widget
Rich replies follow your widget's light or dark theme, and the buttons on cards use your Launcher bubble color. Card links open in a new tab and keep your campaign tags when Keep campaign tags on links is on.
Keyboard and screen-reader friendly
Buttons and links can be reached with Tab, the table and the card row scroll with the arrow keys, and screen readers announce the table caption, the number of cards and the group of quick replies.
In the REST API and MCP server
Send a message and Get a conversation add a structured ui field to replies that showed a rich reply, and the MCP tools chat_with_agent and get_conversation return the same, so your own front end can draw them.
Frequently asked questions
What are interactive chatbot replies?
Replies that contain more than text: a table, a row of cards or buttons the visitor can tap. In intoCHAT they are called rich replies. The agent always writes its text answer and can add one table, one row of cards and one set of quick replies under it when they make the answer clearer.
Does the agent show a table or cards in every answer?
No. It decides for each reply and is told to use rich replies only when they help: a table for a comparison, cards for several options, quick replies for clear next steps. It is told not to use them for a single fact, a yes or no, small talk or a reply of one short paragraph.
Can the chatbot invent products or prices in a card?
It is instructed to fill rich replies only with facts from your knowledge, the conversation or the results of your actions, never with invented products, prices, links or pictures. As with any AI answer, test important questions in the Playground. For product cards straight from your shop data, connect your store: those cards are built from what the store returned.
How are rich replies different from product cards and custom buttons?
Product cards come from a live search of your connected store. Custom buttons are links you set yourself on the Actions tab, shown when the conversation matches. Rich replies are written by the agent for any topic, from your knowledge and actions. All three can appear in the same chat.
Do rich replies cost extra messages?
No. A rich reply is part of the same reply, so it uses no extra message, and it is available on every plan, including Free. When a visitor taps a quick reply or a card's reply button, that sends a message, which counts like a typed one.
Where do rich replies appear?
In the website chat, the Playground and on the Conversations tab, exactly as the visitor saw them. In Slack and email the agent writes plain text. The live chat inbox, the hand-off email, helpdesk tickets and the CSV export show a text version, for example quick replies as [Yes] [No].
Can I turn them off?
Yes. Switch off Rich replies on the Appearance tab and click Save changes. New replies are then text only. Replies that already showed a rich reply keep it in the conversation.
Which language are rich replies in?
The text inside a table, card or quick reply is written by the agent in the language of its reply. The widget's own labels, such as “More”, “Previous” and the note that a link opens in a new tab, follow the widget language you set.
Can I show rich replies in my own app?
Yes. The REST API's Send a message (without streaming) and Get a conversation return a ui field with the table, cards or quick replies as structured data, and the MCP server returns the same. The content field stays plain text, so existing integrations keep working.
