Conversational AI

What conversational AI is

Conversational AI is an umbrella term for systems that communicate with people through text or speech. Website chatbots, voice assistants and AI agents inside apps all fall under it. Users do not need to click through menus or learn fixed commands. They write or speak normally, and the system works out what they mean.

Early chatbots followed decision trees: each button led to a scripted answer. Modern conversational AI usually relies on a large language model, which can interpret free text, keep track of the conversation and write a new answer each time.

How it works

A typical exchange runs through a few steps:

  • Understanding: the system reads the message, detects the language and infers what the person wants.
  • Context: earlier messages are kept, so follow-up questions make sense.
  • Knowledge: in business use, relevant passages are retrieved from the company's own content, so the answer rests on facts rather than the model's general training.
  • Action: if needed, the system calls another tool, such as a product search.
  • Response: the model writes a reply in natural language.

Example

A visitor on an outdoor shop's website types: “Do you have waterproof hiking boots in size 43, and can I return them if they don't fit?” A conversational AI agent recognizes two questions, searches the catalog for matching boots, looks up the return policy in the shop's help pages and answers both in one reply. A rule-based bot would typically make the visitor pick menu options first.

Why it matters for business chatbots

Conversational AI turns a website into a place where visitors can ask questions at any hour and get a specific answer. It can handle routine questions, point people to the right product or page and collect contact details from interested visitors. Its quality depends on the content it can draw on and on clear rules, for example to say when it does not know rather than guess.

How intoCHAT uses conversational AI

intoCHAT lets you build a conversational AI agent trained on your own website pages, files, text snippets and Q&A pairs, then add it to your site with one script tag. Answers come from hybrid retrieval over your content, the agent replies in the visitor's language, and it says when it doesn't know instead of inventing an answer. The underlying OpenAI model is chosen and managed by intoCHAT.

Frequently asked questions

Is conversational AI the same as a chatbot?

Not exactly. A chatbot is any program that chats with users, and many older chatbots follow fixed scripts. Conversational AI is the technology that lets a chatbot understand free text and respond flexibly. Most modern AI chatbots are built on it.

What technologies does conversational AI use?

Most current systems use a large language model to understand and generate text. Business deployments usually add retrieval from a knowledge base, so answers are grounded in company content, and sometimes tool calling, so the assistant can look up live data.

Can conversational AI give wrong answers?

Yes. Language models can produce confident but incorrect statements, known as hallucinations. Grounding answers in your own content, writing clear instructions and letting the assistant admit when it doesn't know reduce this risk, but you should still test answers before going live.
