AI Chatbot

What an AI chatbot is

A chatbot is any program that talks with people through text. Older chatbots followed decision trees: the visitor clicked a button or typed a keyword, and the bot returned a prewritten reply. An AI chatbot understands free-form questions, including typos, follow-up questions and different ways of asking the same thing, and writes a new answer each time.

Most AI chatbots today run on a large language model (LLM). On its own, an LLM knows a lot about the world in general but nothing about your prices, policies or products. That is why chatbots for business add a retrieval step that feeds the model your own content before it answers.

How an AI chatbot works

A typical business AI chatbot handles each message in a few steps:

This pattern is called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Some chatbots can also call tools, for example to search a product catalog or send data to a company system. Chatbots that take actions like this are often called AI agents.

  • The visitor types a question into the chat window on a website.
  • The system searches the company’s knowledge base for the passages most relevant to the question.
  • Those passages, the conversation so far and the bot’s instructions are sent to the language model.
  • The model writes an answer based on that material, and the reply appears in the chat.

Example

A furniture shop adds an AI chatbot to its website and trains it on its delivery, returns and product pages. A visitor asks: “Can you deliver a sofa to a third-floor flat, and what does that cost?” The chatbot finds the delivery policy, explains the carry-up service and its price as written on the page, and points to the delivery page. If the policy says nothing about stairs, a well-configured chatbot says it cannot confirm that detail and suggests contacting the shop instead of guessing.

Why AI chatbots matter for businesses

An AI chatbot can answer routine questions at any hour and in the visitor’s language, without making people wait for an email reply. Common jobs are answering product and policy questions, guiding visitors to the right page and collecting contact details from people who want to be contacted.

The limits matter as much as the benefits. A chatbot is only as good as the content it learns from, it can still make mistakes, and it does not replace a person in sensitive or complex cases. Good setups keep answers tied to approved sources, make clear that the visitor is talking to an AI and offer a way to reach the team.

How intoCHAT builds AI chatbots

intoCHAT lets you create an AI chat agent from your website pages, files, text snippets and Q&A pairs, then add it to your site with one script tag or the WordPress plugin. Answers come from hybrid search over your content, and built-in rules keep the agent grounded in your sources so it says when it does not know. You can test the agent in a playground before it goes live and collect leads directly in the chat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an AI chatbot and a rule-based chatbot?

A rule-based chatbot follows a script of buttons and keywords and can only return prewritten replies. An AI chatbot uses a language model to understand free-form questions and write new answers. Many business chatbots combine both, using AI for open questions and fixed flows for things like contact forms.

Can an AI chatbot give wrong answers?

Yes. Language models can produce confident but incorrect answers, which is called hallucination. The risk drops when the chatbot answers from retrieved company content, follows rules to admit missing information and is tested before launch.

Do I need to code to add an AI chatbot to my website?

Usually not. Most chatbot platforms, intoCHAT included, give you a snippet to paste into your site or a plugin for systems such as WordPress. Most of the setup work is choosing the content the chatbot learns from and writing its instructions.

Is an AI chatbot the same as an AI agent?

The terms overlap. An AI chatbot mainly answers questions in a conversation, while an AI agent can also take actions such as calling an API or searching a product catalog. Many products, intoCHAT included, call their chatbots agents because they can do both.
