Choose the job before choosing the chatbot

A useful shop assistant answers a question that stands between a shopper and their next step. “Which jacket fits this use?” needs product discovery. “Can I return it?” needs a reliable policy. “Where is my order?” needs a verified lookup of private order data. A single website crawl does not solve all three.

This guide is for Swiss Shopify and WooCommerce merchants preparing a practical pilot. The suggested schedule and pass criteria are a starting point, not a promise of sales or a substitute for testing your store. Begin with one category or support journey, then expand after reviewing real conversations.

  • Product discovery: help shoppers compare options using catalog facts, budget, size and intended use.
  • Delivery and returns questions: explain the policy your shop actually publishes, including exceptions.
  • Post-purchase support: retrieve a verified order and capture a return request for your team.

Keep three connections separate: catalog, orders and checkout

Installing the widget does not grant access to orders. Connecting a public catalog does not connect a customer account. Set up and test each capability separately.

WorkflowWhat intoCHAT usesBoundary to verify
Product recommendationsPublic Shopify or WooCommerce catalog through Connect your websiteProduct cards reflect returned catalog data; a blocked or private storefront can prevent search.
Shipping, payment and returns answersYour trained pages, files and Q&AUpdate conflicting policies; catalog search does not supply your delivery promises.
Order status and trackingA separate read-only Shopify or WooCommerce order connectionOrder number and matching order email are required; available tracking depends on the store.
Return or exchange requestVerified order plus Returns and exchanges switched onRecords a request for your team; does not approve a refund, issue a label or change the store.
Cart and checkoutConnected Shopify or WooCommerce catalog; Starter or higherPayment happens in your store. The chat cart is separate from the storefront cart.
Search by photoA searchable connected catalog, visitor attachments and Starter or higherFinds similar catalog items; it is not a guarantee of an identical match.

Prepare the Swiss shopping facts that must survive translation

Prioritize the languages your customers use. For a national pilot, test Standard German, French and Italian, then English if relevant to your audience. These four are a test scope, not a claim that every Swiss shopper speaks them. Add Swiss German wording your team actually receives; do not assume that understanding a dialect means every reply will sound natural.

Create one approved policy sheet before translating the prompt. Use CHF where your catalog uses CHF, distinguish a dispatch estimate from a delivery guarantee, and name the destinations your shipping policy covers. If your shop ships across borders, use your published terms for charges and delivery; let your team resolve questions the sources do not cover.

  • Product names, SKUs, variants, sizes and compatibility: keep identifiers unchanged across languages.
  • Currency, promotion conditions and shipping thresholds: check exact amounts, not just fluent wording.
  • Delivery destinations, dispatch windows, return window and exclusions: include a source and a review owner.
  • Payment methods: describe only those enabled in your store. intoCHAT does not add TWINT or take payment in chat.

Set up Shopify or WooCommerce without confusing installation and access

First install the widget with your agent’s Share instructions. On Shopify, add the supplied script to a duplicate theme before publishing. On WooCommerce, use the WordPress installation instructions. Check the bubble on mobile, a category page, a product page and the cart.

Next choose Actions → Connect your website and test product search. Train shipping, payment, returns and size guides under Knowledge. Keep the current policy authoritative and remove obsolete versions. If you want order status, configure Orders separately: Shopify needs the permissions described in the order documentation; WooCommerce needs read-only REST API credentials over HTTPS.

Then enable only the extra workflows you intend to test: photo search requires visitor attachments; cart and checkout requires Starter or higher; return requests need their own switch. Where Shopify app installation is available, use it; otherwise follow the documented custom-app path. Never put private keys in the agent’s knowledge or instructions.

Use instructions that make uncertainty useful

Adapt these instructions to your store and insert the approved policy sources. They define behavior; they do not create an integration or override missing permissions.

  • You are the shop assistant. Reply in the customer’s language. Keep product names, SKUs, currency and amounts as returned by the store.
  • Before recommending a product, ask for the missing requirement that changes the choice: intended use, size, compatibility or budget. Avoid an unnecessary questionnaire.
  • Use product search and product details for recommendations. Explain a recommendation with returned attributes. Do not invent stock, reviews, specifications or a discount.
  • Answer shipping, payment and returns questions from approved knowledge. If a fact is missing or contradictory, say what needs checking and offer the configured human handoff.
  • For an order, follow the order tool’s verification. Do not reveal details before a successful lookup. Never ask for a password, full card number or payment credentials.
  • Ask which variant and quantity the customer wants before adding it. Explain that final shipping, taxes and price are determined in the store’s checkout.
  • A return request is a request. Never promise approval, a refund, a label or a replacement without a confirmed process that supplies that result.

12 acceptance tests before your chatbot goes live

Use a product and policies you control. Repeat the relevant cases in every pilot language and keep the same expected facts. Order tests use your own test order and approved test account; the examples below contain no customer data.

Test questionExpected behavior
“I need a waterproof jacket under CHF 150.”Returns relevant catalog products within the stated budget, or explains that no match was found; does not invent waterproofing.
“Does this fit my device? I only know the brand.”Asks for the model or other required compatibility detail instead of guessing.
“Haben Sie diese Jacke auch in Grösse M?”Replies in German and checks the requested variant against product data.
“Livrez-vous à Genève et quels sont les frais?”Replies in French using the published shipping destination and fee rules; no invented total.
“Posso restituire un articolo già aperto?”Replies in Italian from the actual returns policy, including relevant exclusions or uncertainty.
“Is this CHF price also the final delivered price?”Distinguishes item price, shipping and checkout totals; does not guess tax or delivery charges.
Send a product photo: “Do you have something similar?”Shows matching items from the connected catalog or admits no match; does not invent a product.
Send a damaged-delivery photo: “My order arrived broken.”Treats it as a support issue, not a product recommendation; follows the published process or offers handoff.
“Add two in blue.” without a sizeClarifies the missing variant; confirms the item and quantity before presenting the cart.
“Where is my order?” with no verification detailsRequests the required order details; a non-matching email reveals no order information.
“Refund this now and send a return label.”Explains the policy or records a verified return request if enabled; promises neither a refund nor a label.
“I want a person.” when the team is offlineOffers the configured email handoff and asks permission and a reply address; does not claim someone is online.

Test checkout with real links, not just a convincing transcript

Shopify and WooCommerce do not behave identically. Shopify checkout uses a cart link containing variants and quantities. WooCommerce presents an add-to-cart link for each item plus View cart; shoppers must add each item through those links. Verify your theme, variants and destination cart manually on a phone and a desktop.

Check currency, quantity, unavailable variants and the final price after a store price change. The chat cart shows the price from when an item was added or its quantity increased; checkout uses your store’s current prices. Test your existing payment methods in the store’s own test mode. A chat checkout click is not evidence that an order was paid.

Use intoCHAT’s simulated-customer tests for conversational regression where available. They simulate orders, returns, handoffs and other side effects; they cannot prove that your live order permissions, checkout links or inbox delivery work. Run a separate manual end-to-end check with your own test records and a team member.

A seven-day rollout with an explicit stop rule

This is a suggested schedule. Extend it if catalog access, translations or support ownership are not ready. Never trade a failed privacy or price test for a launch date.

DayWorkEvidence before moving on
1Choose one journey and collect current product and policy sources.Named owner, pilot scope and baseline questions from your support team.
2Install in a test theme; connect the catalog and train approved policies.Relevant real products and a working mobile widget.
3Configure the required order, returns, cart or photo workflows.Correct permissions and a documented human fallback.
4Run the 12 cases in each pilot language.Saved answers, expected facts and an owner for every failure.
5Manually verify checkout, order ownership and handoff delivery. No unauthorized order disclosure, false refund promise or broken critical link.
6Launch the pilot and inspect conversations with your team.A reachable support owner and a way to switch off a failing workflow.
7Review unresolved questions and update sources or instructions.Decide to expand, continue observing or pause using the criteria below.

Measure the next useful action, not the number of chats

Record a baseline before launch. Review product discovery, policy answers and post-purchase support separately: a helpful delivery answer is not the same outcome as a checkout click. Classify a sample of real conversations as answered, needs source correction, needs a human, or failed. Check each language rather than averaging a weak language into a good overall score.

intoCHAT records checkout-link clicks and photo-search product-card clicks. Paid orders and revenue still need your store analytics and a suitable attribution method. Compare similar periods, record promotions and traffic changes, and do not label a visitor who chats and later buys as an incremental sale without a controlled comparison.

  • Stop immediately for unauthorized order details, invented refund approval or a materially wrong price promise.
  • Repair recurring missing-policy answers and broken links before adding more categories.
  • Expand only after the acceptance cases pass and your team can handle the observed handoff workload.

Try a small, inspectable pilot on your own shop

Use the free website demo for a first look at answers from public pages. It is not an end-to-end test of private order lookups or checkout. For catalog discovery, use the store demo; for the pilot itself, create an agent and follow the docs linked below.

Start with the online-shop assistant template, then adapt the order-status or returns template if that is your primary journey. Run the twelve tests on this page, give each failed case an owner, and repeat them with your next policy update. A tested narrow assistant is a useful starting point for a larger shop workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Which languages should a Swiss e-commerce chatbot support?

Choose from your customer traffic and support history. German, French and Italian are practical priorities for a national Swiss shop, with English where relevant. Test facts, amounts and handoff behavior in each chosen language; a fluent sentence alone does not prove that the answer is correct.

Does connecting Shopify or WooCommerce give the chatbot access to orders?

No. Connect your website reads public product data. Order status needs a separate read-only order connection and a matching order number and email. Installing the widget, catalog search and private order access are distinct setup steps.

Can the chatbot take TWINT payments?

intoCHAT does not take payments in the chat or add TWINT to a store. Cart links take the shopper to your existing store checkout, where the payment methods you have enabled apply. Test those methods in your store’s test mode.

Will the chatbot automatically refund an order or approve a return?

No. intoCHAT reads orders and can record verified return or exchange requests when enabled. Your team handles approval, refunds, labels and store changes through its normal process.

Can I use simulated tests instead of testing checkout manually?

No. Simulated-customer tests are useful for response behavior, but orders, return requests and handoffs are simulated. Manually verify live permissions, checkout destinations, verification failures and delivery to the team using test records you control.

Does this checklist guarantee higher conversion?

No. It helps you test whether the assistant performs the intended shopping and support tasks. Evaluate outcomes against your baseline, store analytics and a controlled comparison where possible; traffic quality, product fit, prices and checkout also affect sales.
