What makes a good welcome message

A good welcome message is short, says what the agent can help with and invites a question. Visitors decide in a second whether the chat is worth their time.

  • One or two sentences. Longer greetings get skipped.
  • Be specific: “Ask me about delivery times, sizes or returns” works better than “How can I help?”.
  • Match the tone of your website.
  • Do not promise what the agent cannot do, such as a callback or a booking.

Many visitors do not know what to ask a chatbot. Suggested questions show what it knows and let people start with one click.

Choose questions your customers really ask and that your content answers well. Check your chat logs after a few weeks and replace the questions nobody clicks.
