Settings history: see changes and restore a version
See every saved change to an agent's settings, who made it and what changed, compare any version with the current settings line by line, and restore an earlier version in one step.
Every time someone saves an agent's settings, intoCHAT keeps a copy of them. History shows those versions: when each was saved, by whom and what it changed. You can compare any version with the settings as they are now and put an earlier version back in one step, for example when a change to the instructions made the answers worse.
Open the history
- Open your agent.
- Click History at the top, next to Preview and Save.
The list on the left shows the versions, newest first. Each one shows:
- when it was saved, for example "2h ago" (point at it for the exact date and time);
- who saved it, by the name in their profile or their email address;
- Changed: the settings that save changed, for example "Instructions, Primary colour and 2 more".
The newest version is marked Latest. A version made by restoring an earlier one is marked Restore.
What a version holds
A version is a full copy of the agent's own settings at that moment:
- Setup: the name, instructions, guardrails, reply language, hand-off by email, the live chat and rating switches, web search and its sites.
- Knowledge: auto-resync and its frequency, and the crawl settings.
- Appearance: the welcome messages, suggested and follow-up questions, source links, wording, images, theme, font, corners, colours, position, "Powered by intoCHAT", how the chat opens, the rollout share, launcher behaviour, visitor tools, previous chats and visitor attachments.
- Leads: the lead form and its fields, when it shows, lead alerts and their recipients, and which events go to Slack.
- Share: allowed domains, the private switch, "Only verified visitors can chat", the Help Page, limits and blocked countries, spam protection and ending idle chats.
- Conversations: topic analysis and the topic list.
Secrets are never copied into a version: not the Slack webhook URL and not the identity verification secret.
A version is saved whenever a save changes at least one of these settings, whether in the agent form or on one of the cards saved on their own (such as Web search, Live chat or Limits and access). A save that changes nothing doesn't add a version. The first time a change is saved, the settings from before it are kept too, as Settings before history started, so even the first change can be undone.
Compare a version
Click a version in the list. Two views show what differs:
- What this save changed: the settings this save changed, compared with the version before it.
- Compared with now: how this version differs from the current settings. This is exactly what restoring it would change.
Each changed setting shows the value before and after. Long text, such as the instructions or guardrails, is compared line by line: removed lines are red and struck through with a −, added lines are green with a +, and long runs of unchanged lines are folded. Colours show a swatch beside the code.
Restore a version
- Open History and click the version you want back.
- Check Compared with now: these are the settings that will change.
- Click Restore this version, then Restore to confirm.
The settings listed under Compared with now replace the current ones straight away, for every visitor. The editor reloads with the restored settings. The restore is saved as a new version, so you can undo it the same way by restoring the version before it.
Some settings only come back if they still work today. The message after the restore lists any that were left as they are:
- Only verified visitors can chat stays off if the agent no longer has an identity secret, because nobody could be verified.
- Visitor attachments stay off if file attachments aren't set up on the server.
- Slack alert events stay as they are if Slack isn't connected. Add the webhook URL first.
- Powered by intoCHAT always shows without an active subscription, whatever the version says.
- A value that is no longer valid, for example a font that was removed, is skipped.
A setting added to intoCHAT after a version was saved isn't in that version, so restoring it leaves that setting as it is.
Who can do what
| Owner | Admin | Editor | Viewer | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| See the history and compare versions | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Restore a version | Yes | Yes | No | No |
Restoring replaces settings that other people may have changed since, so only the owner and admins can do it. Every save by a team member is recorded under their own name. See Team members and roles.
Limits
- The last 100 versions are kept per agent. When a new version is saved, the oldest one is deleted.
- A duplicated agent starts with an empty history. Its first saved change starts it.
- Deleting an agent deletes its history.
- When a team member is removed, their versions stay in the history. If they delete their intoCHAT account, their versions show "Someone no longer in the account".
Next steps
- Write better instructions: Instructions.
- Change how the widget looks: Appearance.
- Test a change in the Playground before you save it: Test and adjust.
- Decide who can change your agents: Team members and roles.
